91¿ì²¥

91¿ì²¥ faculty and students participate in several activities to encourage mathematics interest and talent in regional schools, from elementary to high school.

Charlotte Mathematics Club

Prof. Emeritus Stephen Davis and Prof. Carl Yerger are coordinators for the  which works with middle and high school students who have high levels of interest and talent in mathematics. The club meets once a month to provide opportunities, including competitions, for mathematical enrichment and service, as opposed to remediation.

School Visits

Occasionally, a 91¿ì²¥ student or group of students will be mentored by a 91¿ì²¥ faculty member to present an activity or lesson in an area school.  For example, in recent years, Dr. Ana Wright and Dr. Matthew Bachmann have worked with the Women in Math group at 91¿ì²¥ to host a booth at to share flexagons with K-12 students.  In a prior year, Prof. Chartier organized a new math performance group called Main Street Math that visited four 3rd grade classes at the Community School of 91¿ì²¥.  Additionally, a 91¿ì²¥ faculty member will occasionally speak to a local high school class, math club, or larger group about some intriguing topic in mathematics. Contact Prof. Chartier for more information about such a visit.

Charlotte Teachers Institute

Through the , Prof. Emerita Donna Molinek, Prof. Tim Chartier and Prof. Raghu Ramanujan have given extensive seminars on topics in mathematics and computer science that enrich the experience and instruction of area high-school teachers.

Museum of Math

Prof. Chartier is on, and was first chair of, the Advisory Council for the  located in New York City. The museum's exhibits travel around the country.

Mime-matics

Prof. Chartier is a professionally-trained mime and developed the presentation "Mime-matics" (PDF) that explores math through the art of mime and introduces mathematical concepts such as patterns, division, and infinity. Workshops, led by 91¿ì²¥ undergraduates often accompany the presentation and are led in classrooms (in schools) or at booths or exhibits (in museums or libraries).

Private Tutors for Community Members

Yes, we do have mathematics and computer science students available for tutoring. Please email your inquiry to mathcs@davidson.edu and a student(s) will reach out to you directly. Individual tutor rates may vary; an average rate of $30-$45/hour is usually appropriate for tutoring high school students. Our more experienced tutors' and faculty's hourly rates will be higher between $50-$75/hour. Acceptable payment is cash or payment app after each session – no checks or credit cards.

To start, please send a brief description of what you are looking for and include the following details:

• Start/End Dates
• Time Needed Per Week (weekly, 2x a week, 1 hour or 2 hours)
• Preferred Days
• Subject (Algebra, Calculus I, etc.)
• What school is your student attending
• Your contact information

Tutoring locations are up to the individual tutors.  We HIGHLY recommend that our students use the on-campus common spaces such as Alvarez College Union, Hurt Hub, or nearby public spaces such as the Town of 91¿ì²¥ Public Library or Summit Coffee to meet with community members.

Mathematics Education Organizations

Prof. Emeriti Stephen Davis and Klein have been involved in activities of the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics. This included Klein writing the State Comprehensive finals, and professors Davis and Klein have been important leaders in the College Board Advanced Placement Program for Calculus. They have been leaders in AP Calculus reading (grading) and on the AP Calculus Development Committee. Many faculty members contribute to mathematics exposition relevant to teachers of advanced high school mathematics.
