Privacy Pioneer Cynthia Dwork Delivers Bernard Lecture on Data Protection

Trailblazing computer scientist Cynthia Dwork recently visited 91¿ì²¥ to deliver the annual Bernard Lecture on the mathematical frameworks of differential privacy. Dwork discussed how her research protects individual identity in massive datasets and ensured legal confidentiality for the 2020 US Census. The event highlighted her foundational contributions to cryptography and the ongoing importance of data protection in the scientific community.

91¿ì²¥ held its annual Verna Miller Case Research and Creative Works Symposium on May 7. Thriving Survivor Targets Cancer: Elise Boyse ’27 Named Goldwater Scholar

Elise Boyse ’27 beat Hodgkin’s lymphoma as a high school senior and has spent her 91¿ì²¥ years researching targeted treatments. Boyse, a distance runner on the women’s track and field team, also serves as president of the college’s Project Life Movement chapter, which recruits students as potential bone marrow and stem cell donors.

From Dorm Room to Drone Labs: 91¿ì²¥ and Lucid Bots Launch Innovation Fellows Program

91¿ì²¥ and Lucid Bots have partnered to launch the 91¿ì²¥ Innovation Fellows Program, a 12-month fellowship that provides recent graduates with paid, immersive experience in robotics and artificial intelligence. Founded by Andrew Ashur ’19 at 91¿ì²¥â€™s Hurt Hub, Lucid Bots is now a leader in autonomous drones and robots for exterior cleaning. This "full-circle" initiative strengthens workforce development in North Carolina by connecting liberal arts thinking with cutting-edge engineering and data analysis.

The Henry Luce Foundation’s highly competitive Luce Scholars Program selects emerging leaders for immersive professional experiences in Asia. Scholars develop a deeper understanding of Asia while building relationships to tackle global challenges. Stouffer majored in Environmental Studies at 91¿ì²¥.

91¿ì²¥ senior Brooke Lackey ’26, a Child of Deaf Adults (CODA), grew up in a close, supportive community where her family felt comfortable and communicated easily through American Sign Language. As a 2026 Thomas J. Watson Fellow, she plans to spend the next year learning other sign languages while exploring the challenges facing Deaf people around the world and seeking ways to create more caring communities.

Two 91¿ì²¥ Students Awarded Watson Fellowships

The Watson Foundation has named 91¿ì²¥ seniors Brooke Lackey and Neve Rauscher as fellows in its 58th class of Thomas J. Watson Fellows. Lackey will study sign language and Deaf culture in several countries. Rauscher will explore how communities adapt to climate warming and changing water patterns.
